Invisalign vs. Braces: How to Actually Decide

By Dr. Anjali Patel, DMD, MS, Board-Certified Orthodontist · May 20, 2026

Every consultation, someone asks: "Which is better, Invisalign or braces?" The honest answer is neither is universally better — the right choice depends on your specific bite, your age, your budget, and how much you care about visibility during treatment. Here's how we actually make the call.

Bite complexity matters most. Invisalign excels at mild-to-moderate crowding, spacing, and minor bite corrections. For complex cases — significant crowding, major bite discrepancies, or cases requiring precise tooth rotation — traditional braces still offer more reliable control. At your consultation, we'll take a 3D scan and tell you honestly which category your case falls into.

Compliance is the hidden variable. Invisalign only works if you wear the aligners 20-22 hours a day. Teens who won't reliably wear aligners often do better with braces, which work regardless of cooperation. Adults with disciplined routines are usually excellent Invisalign candidates.

Cost is closer than people expect. At Meridian, Invisalign starts around $125/month and traditional braces around $95/month — a modest gap, not the dramatic price difference many patients assume from national franchise advertising.

Visibility and lifestyle. Invisalign is nearly invisible and removable for eating, brushing, and special occasions — a real advantage for camera-facing professionals or self-conscious teens. Braces require more diet restrictions (no popcorn, hard candy, or sticky foods) but never come out, which some patients actually prefer since there's no daily discipline required.

Treatment time is usually comparable — both typically run 12-24 months for full treatment, though very mild cases can finish faster with Invisalign's more frequent tray changes.

Our recommendation at your consultation isn't a sales pitch — if Invisalign won't give you the result you want, we'll say so, even though it's the more expensive option. That's the whole point of a free consultation before you commit to anything.
